CINCINNATI, Ohio — It’s turkey week so of course everyone is talking football, but in Cincy the gridiron will have to share the spotlight with high schools hoops. That’s right, the regular season action on the boy’s side gets underway this week, and there are some intriguing games on the schedule highlighted by the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic at Mason High School Friday and Saturday. To get you in the right mind frame to start the season let’s preview some of the matchups on the slate this week.
Lakota East vs. Taft, Friday 4:00pm (Mason H.S.)- There are a lot of intrigue surrounding this game for a number of reasons. First off you have a matchup of one of the best D-I programs in Cincy against one of the best D-III programs in Cincy. A matchup that I can’t remember taking place ever. Then you have the debut of one of the top freshman in the nation in Taft’s Rayvon Griffith. Already holding a D-I offer (Kent St.), Griffith is already looked at as one of the top players in the always ultra-talented CMAC. And we haven’t even mentioned East 2021 point man Nate Johnson, who according to Verbal Commits, also holds an offer from Kent St. along with Ohio and Miami (OH), or the big man matchup between seniors Alex Mangold (East) and Nekhi Smith (Taft). While the lineup for Ohio Valley Hoops Classic has lots of high-quality matchups, this game has a chance to be the gem of the weekend.
Moeller vs. Cleveland Heights Lutheran East, Friday 5:45pm (Mason H.S.)- The road to a third straight state title begins for the Crusaders with a matchup against last season’s D-III runner-up. While the names may not be as familiar as in the past, Moeller is again loaded with talent and is again seen as the favorite to cut down the nets come March. Junior C Logan Duncomb holds four offers from the Big Ten alone while athletic senior G Max Land announced his commitment to St. Francis University via his Twitter account on October 4th. With at least three other players on the roster also holding D-I offers, it is going to be a tough task for Lutheran East to pull off the upset. Oh and by the way, Coach Kremer’s program has not lost to another program from Ohio since the 2017 state title game. Good luck with that.
Gamble Montessori at Clark Montessori, Saturday 7:30pm- While the name recognition may not be there like the previous two games talked about, what we have here are two quality D-III programs opening the season against one another. Gone for the Gators is 2021 G Kaden Warner who moved to West Virginia over the summer. But Coach Berdo Allen has brought in another quick and exciting point man in Dre Kindell (2021) who is electric in transition and is a willing sharer of the basketball. The matchup between himself and Clark G Sean Ealy (2020) should be highly entertaining. Speaking of Clark, their 2019 graduating class averaged over 40ppg last season on their way to the Miami Valley Scarlet conference crown. It will be interesting to see who will be able to step up and provide Ealy with some scoring help.
