Nate Johnson scored 7 points in the quarter to lead the Thunderhawks to an early 16-7 lead after one. Defensively, Lakota East was able to hold senior forward Mitch Greer in check for much of the game, and held him scoreless in the first quarter of Friday evenings game.
Mason came out of the gate hot in the second quarter and they were able to cut the lead to 7 points at the break, and headed into the half down 27-20. Mitch Greer was able to get the lid off the basket and scored 4 points in the frame. Head Coach Clint Adkins’ defensive adjustments from their first matchup earlier in the season to this matchup Friday night held a number of Mason scorers in check. At the half, Nate Johnson (9 points) and Jadon Coles (8 points) of the Thunderhawks were in large part the reason for flow of the offense and the reason they went to the locker room with the lead.
The game remained within striking distance for much of the second half for the Comets and they came out of the locker room with much more aggressiveness offensively and defensively to try and cut the deficit and take the lead. Jack Cooper of the Comets scored 6 points in the third quarter and had 10 altogether heading into the final frame. Mitch Greer had 6 points of his own headed to the fourth, but it wasn’t enough to cut into the lead as Lakota East entered the final quarter with a lead of 40-31.
Defensively in the fourth, the Comets stepped up their defensive pressure on the ball enough to cut the lead to three points at 46-43 midway through the fourth. Jack Cooper and Mitch Greer both hit a couple of big three pointers in the frame and ended with 16 points and 12 points respectively. In the end, Nate Johnson and Jadon Coles still continued to be too much for Mason to handle and the Thunderhawks ended up pulling away with a 61-48 victory. Johnson ended the game with 21 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Coles ended with 13 points, 1 rebound and 3 assists.
With the victory, Lakota East improves to 13-2 (9-1, GMC) on the year and Mason falls to 8-6 (6-4, GMC) on the season.
