Week 3: Taking a glimpse at some of the very best contests in the area for this week

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Week three of the regular season brings with it some very compelling matchups for a number of reasons. We have teams who are not known for their basketball success with an opportunity to show their early season success is no fluke if they can pull out big time victories. While other programs hope to avoid digging early holes while chasing their respective conference crowns. Here is 275 Hoops Week Three Preview.

Taylor (3-0, 1-0) at Deer Park (3-0, 1-0), Tuesday 7:30pm- According to the Cincinnati Hills League website the Taylor program has not had a winning season since at least 2007. So a win at Deer Park will show the rest of the city that the Yellow Jackets are for real. But the Wildcats are 24-4 over the past two years in league play, so Taylor will definitely have their work cut out for them. And you never know, there might be a 275 sighting on the sidelines.

Princeton (1-1, 0-1) at Lakota West (1-1, 1-0), Tuesday 7:30pm- Looking to avoid an 0-2 start in a tough conference, the Vikings will lean hard on the perimeter trio of Deairius Barker (2020), Cumberland commit Khalil Davis (2020), and super sophomore Bowen Hardman to help notch there 1st GMC victory. But they will face another talented perimeter trio in seniors Carter Combs and Julian Mackey, who is 2nd in the Greater Miami Conference in scoring at 23.5ppg, along with junior Oscean Anuforo. Whichever trio produces the most will win, plain and simple.

CHCA (2-1, 2-0) at North College Hill (1-2, 1-1), Tuesday 7:30pm- While other D-III teams may get more pub in Cincinnati, CHCA is a team that can play with anyone in that division. The Eagles have given up a combined 57 points over the last two games, including the 19 they gave up against Summit Country Day last Friday. Traditionally NCH has always been a tough environment for opposing teams which should make this a good test for CHCA. Watch for a 275 sighting at this game.

LaSalle (3-0, 0-0) at Covington Catholic (KY) (0-1), Friday 7:30pm- The Lancers cross the creek, another name for the Ohio River if you’re from the Cincy area, to play one of the best teams not just in Kentucky but Greater Cincinnati. Winners of two KHSAA titles since 2014, Cov Cath is again loaded with outstanding talent, particularly in the 2022 and 2023 classes with players like Chandler Starks (2023) and Walker Horn (2022). This is the start of a tough 7-days for the Lancers as they follow up this game with two more road games against Winton Woods and Lakota West. A win against the Colonels would be a good start to this three game stretch.

Flagler Palm Coast (FL) at Moeller (1-1, 0-0), Friday 7:30pm- Yes you are reading that right, Moeller had their 50-game in state win streak snapped by St. Vincent-St. Mary 64-59 on Saturday. But the winning was going to come to an end eventually, better now than March. So it’s time to see how the Crusaders deal with a tad bit of adversity, if that’s what you want to call it for a team who has not lost two games in a row since February of 2016.

Taft (1-2, 0-0) at Hughes (2-0, 1-0), Friday 7:30pm- The first of two annual meetings between these CMAC rivals. A loss by the Senators would put them two games back of the Big Red in the conference standings. And in a conference as competitive as this one being two games back, even this early in the season, is a tough hill to climb. Expect the energy to be on 10 in Krueck Gym.

Aiken (3-0, 0-0) at Western Hills (3-0, 1-0), Friday 7:30pm- Is there a team that has looked better in the first couple of weeks than the Mustangs? They have won their first three games by a combined 92 points and have scored at least 79 points in all three games. But if Coach Stokes squad wants to show they are to be taken seriously then a win against the defending co-conference champions would definitely do the trick. One of the ways West High can get the victory is to slow down guard Jakada Stone. The Falcon junior is averaging over 27 points, 8 rebounds and close to 6 assist per game. And what’s even more impressive is Stone’s close to 5 to 1 assist to turnover ratio. If fast pace, high scoring basketball is your thing this is the game to be at.
